02 / 04On the floor

Three things worth knowing before you buy a rug.

Ornate Persian rug with a central medallion in blue on a cream background
01

Read the medallion first.

The medallion anchors the field, and the quarter-medallions in the corners are its echo — the weaver is quoting the centre back at you four times. Once you can see that structure, you can see it in almost every classical design, and you stop buying "a red rug" and start buying a drawing.

02

Ask what the colour is made of.

The classical palette comes out of plants and minerals — madder root for the reds, indigo for the blues, walnut husk for the browns. Natural dyes soften and settle as they age instead of going flat, which is why an old rug can look better than a new one. It is a fair question to ask about any piece. Ask it here.

03

Then walk around it.

A hand-knotted pile leans one way. Stand at one end and the field is light; walk to the other and the same wool, the same dye, goes deep. Nothing about the rug has changed except you. It is the first thing we show anyone on the floor — and it is the one thing a photograph on a screen cannot do for you.

03 / 04Care & repair

The other half of the business.

Cleaning is performed onsite at the Amiri Rug Gallery, under the professional supervision of our expert staff. Your rug does not get shipped to a plant somewhere else.

Cleaning

Onsite and supervised. How often?

  • Every three years for the average use and traffic rug.
  • Once a year with pets, children or allergies.

Be proactive and call us before adding any household cleaners to your rug that could, in fact, damage the fibers.

Repair & restoration

Bring us the damage. We have almost certainly seen it before:

  • Unraveling edges
  • Loose fringes
  • Various holes
  • Worn areas
  • Moth damage

Antique trade-in

We will trade in your antique carpets and tapestries. Bring the piece in, or send a photograph first and we will tell you whether it is worth the trip.

Ask if you qualify for free pick up and delivery.

"There are a number of rug dealers in the Miami Circle area, and I expected a tiring afternoon of visiting many of them… Instead of that long day I bought my rug here – my first stop."

"They cleaned my rug giving special attention to a red wine stain. They also replaced fringe where it had caught in the vacuum, and removed red Georgia clay stains from the opposite fringe."
